Monaghan Town Runners AC. A brief history…
A number of individuals based in the Monaghan Town Area would meet regularly while out running. Rather than running on their own, they agreed to meet up on a regular basis and this led to them training specifically for the Monaghan 10 & 5 mile road race in August 2012.
Following the 10 miler race, those same individuals agreed to carry on their training sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday nights and it became evident that as word spread and as the numbers grew attending the training sessions, there was a need for a running club in the Monaghan Town area that would cater for adults of all running abilities wishing to run. Subsequently the training sessions evolved to accommodate 3 different groups of athletes, beginner, intermediate and advanced groups.
By January 2013 there was now up to 120 individuals attending the training sessions each night, a decision was taken to set up an absolute beginner group to accommodate those individuals who were running for the first time, this began later that January.
As numbers steadily increased a decision was taken and Monaghan Town Runners AC was born, and at our very first AGM in March 2013 it was agreed by all in attendance that membership of the Monaghan County Athletics Board and the Athletic Association of Ireland would be sought. In June 2013 Monaghan Town Runners AC were duly accepted in to membership.
Today, MTRs cater for athletes of all levels of fitness from absolute beginners to our marathon runners, with the focus being fitness and fun.
